The Six Best Parts of Being an AFLV Intern
Where do I even begin?!
I have been going to AFLV Central since February 2016 and have interned for the past two years—once as an undergraduate intern and once as a graduate intern. My intern experience is far superior to my mere conference attendance.
Now don’t get me wrong: the conference is an amazing educational experience that fundamentally changes fraternity/sorority leaders for the better. However, to intern for this conference and for AFLV as an organization not once, but TWICE, has been transformational beyond words.
Actually, I got some words. In fact, I have a list as to why interning for AFLV was so dope. So, without further ado, here are the six best parts of being an AFLV conference intern:
1. Polos & Nametags
If you are looking to gain an experience of a lifetime and look fly doing it, then you are going to love the drip you get from being an AFLV conference intern. The polos you get are so soft and hug you like a nice blanket or that best friend you’ve always wanted. They also make you very official, so do not fear anyone questioning your credentials. On top of all of that freshness, you get your very own nametag. Now everyone will know your name and how cool you are.
2. Walkies & Agent Smith Earpieces
As a part of #TeamAFLV, you will also be given these sick walkie talkies and earpieces that make you look like Agent Smith from “The Matrix.” It may be weird at first, but after the initial reaction, you and the device become one. Who needs iMessage and GroupMe, when you can talk to your pal by holding a button?
3. Meeting & Greeting
Meeting and greeting the people that attend this conference is such a boost of energy. Well, at least it was for me as an extrovert. But so many attendees come to the conference excited to learn, engage and meet new people, so how can you not get hype too? The energy is contagious, and to be a part of it is amazing.
4. NBGLC Stroll Competition
Speaking of energy! If you have never experienced the NBGLC Stroll Competition, then you have never experienced true energy. As an NPHC member, seeing such enthusiasm and excitement for a strolling competition fills me with so much joy. As a retired stroll/step master, I have always gotten so much energy from this event and feed into the energy. For those who are not NPHC members, the stroll comp is fun AND you learn about another culture. Appreciation, not appropriation.
5. Professional Connections + Development
The people that you meet and connect with are amazing resources who can serve as access to so many different professional paths if you let them help you. This opportunity in itself also serves as great development, especially with large-scale event planning and public speaking.
Have you ever spoken in front of a crowd of three thousand people? Well I have, and there is nothing like it. It is thrilling, yet terrifying, at the same time. But now that I’ve done it, I am confident I can do it again. This internship will give you experience that you need to be successful, and I have always tried to capitalize on that.
6. A Phenomenal Team!
I could not end this list without talking about the people that I worked with. Anyone who serves on #TeamAFLV is family. Whether it is the conference interns, the volunteers or the AFLV staff, this team is cohesive, fun and transformational beyond compare. Anyone who gets the chance to work with this highly talented and select group of people has been given an opportunity of a lifetime.
I knew it from the minute I began as an undergraduate intern for AFLV Central in 2018. Knowing this about the team is the reason why I always want to return. They are family and have treated me as such. It takes a lot of energy to serve on #TeamAFLV, and this team filled me with the energy needed to be my best self.
Aside from some of the jokes, being an AFLV conference intern is unique. This list is not representative of everything good that can be encapsulated in the AFLV conference intern experience. But it sure is a great start.
